Who We Are

OCPW Mitigation is a program of OC Public Works Environmental Resources service area. We are  committed to enhancing and restoring Orange County’s native and natural habitats as a core tenet of our mission: protect public health and safety, improve County lands and waterways, and promote environmental quality through restoration, education, regulation and collaborative regional programs.

What We Do

OCPW Mitigation collaborates with our Infrastructure Programs, Construction, and Operations and Maintenance service areas to identify opportunities to avoid and minimize impacts to the natural environment arising from OC Public Works capital improvement and infrastructure maintenance projects. For impacts that cannot be avoided, such as restoring capacity to a flood control channel, compensatory mitigation is required to offset impacts to habitats and special status species. Mitigation is achieved through the restoration, establishment, enhancement, and preservation of natural habitats.  Once a property is dedicated to mitigation, it must be maintained in a natural state in perpetuity.

In the last 30 years, OC Public Works has restored and protected over 400 acres of native habitat, supporting 25 special-status species across 55 sites. Learn more by exploring our interactive Habitats and Species StoryMaps.
